Concierge Corner – Your Guide to Spring in Queenstown
Concierge Corner – Your Guide to Spring in Queenstown

Spring is in the air

Its that time of year again, the snow is melting and the daffodils are coming through. Winter is over and spring has arrived (unless you’re stuck in Westeros!) Many locals used to call Spring a shoulder season between winter and summer, yet as the ever growing popularity of Queenstown increases year on year, the gap between the busy seasons is blurring. There is always something happening in Queenstown, no matter the month or season and with an action packed Spring line up, there is no better time to head to your favourite adventure hub!

With a good month of life left in the ski fields, there is still time to strap on those ski boots and head up the mountain for a bit of warm, sunny spring skiing. The conditions are still great! But if its the fresh powder you’re after, finish the winter season in style and let the guys at Southern Lakes Heli-Ski take you to the remote mountainous regions only accessible by helicopter. The buzz of winter sports never loses traction until right at the end of the season once all the snow has melted.

 Haven’t skied before?

Then let us help you. There is still time! With numerous packages to start you off, its all too easy! Spring is a great time to learn, with quieter days up the mountain. A brand new company has started this winter: Queenstown Indoor Snow Park. Located out in Frankton, its only 15 minutes drive from the hotel and is incredibly local and accessible. They are the first indoor dry slope terrain park in New Zealand and specialise in absolute beginners. Great for kids, great for families. They offer two hour sessions, and the best thing, they are not affected by the weather and operate all year round! Already an advanced skier/snowboarder? Perfect, they also cater their lessons to teach tricks and new skills so you can progress safely before heading up the mountain to test out what you’ve learned. After that, head up the mountain and watch the pros at it.

Spring in Queenstown

The Place To Be

Despite all the action up the mountains, Arrowtown is the place to be this month, and the next! Along with the luscious colours of all the blossoming flowers and the incredible walks to enjoy, Arrowtown hosts some amazing events in September and October. On September 6, join the rest of the community and dine in style at the annual Arrowtown Long Lunch – its quite a sight to behold. Then at the end of the month is the Arrowtown Spring arts festival. The festival encourages artists and students to decorate the town with incredible pieces of art crafted from the numerous workshops dotted around, ranging from painting to photography to flax weaving and choir lessons. It’s quite bazaar..

Facebook/Queenstown Jazz Festival

Once the snow has gone and the mountains have closed, there is still all of Queenstown and its activities to enjoy. With the warmer October weather round the corner, the hype for summer begins.

Towards the end of October, Queenstown celebrates it’s 40th year of the Queenstown Jazz festival. With Saxophone songs and swagger, Queenstown and Arrowtown are in full ‘swing’ (excuse the pun!) Some of your favourite restaurants and bars host incredible musicians from all over New Zealand.

Finish your day in style

It can be quite the day and to finish it off, stop by our Threesixty restaurant and bar and relax with a local glass of Pinot or try our signature cocktail, ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’. A unique twist on an old fashioned using bourbon, thyme and Rose Rabbit liquor – a local orange liquor made in the Cardrona valley at the Cardrona Distillery. I highly recommend a visit there if you have time as they make some very unique artisan spirits sure to raise both eyebrows!

There’s plenty to see and do in spring, so whatever you decide to do with your time in Queenstown, there’s a bit for everyone this season and we’re here to help you make the most of it.
